Notedog on your desktop

The desktop app shows your phone's journal in its own window, on Linux and Windows. It's the same editor you use in the browser, plus a few things a browser tab can't do. Your journal still lives on your phone; the app only connects to it. It's a preview, so expect some rough edges.

Why not just a browser tab?

  • Its own window and a tray icon. Closing the window hides it to the tray, so the page and any edit still waiting to save stay alive.
  • No certificate warning on your network. The app checks your phone's key itself, so there's no self-signed certificate to click through.
  • A new entry from anywhere. Bind notedog-desktop --new-entry to a key in your desktop's settings, and it opens the editor on a new entry.
  • The small things: Ctrl+F to find in the page, a right-click menu (copy an image, open a link in a new window), F5 to reload, and more than one window.

Download and install

Get the file for your system from the latest release. Each release also has a SHA256SUMS file to check the download.

Fedorasudo dnf install ./notedog-desktop-<version>.x86_64.rpm
Debian, Ubuntusudo apt install ./notedog-desktop_<version>_amd64.deb
Arch, Omarchysudo pacman -U ./notedog-desktop-<version>-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
Other LinuxThe .AppImage: make it executable (chmod +x) and run it. It adds no launcher entry, and some systems need FUSE 2 (libfuse2) for AppImages.
WindowsRun notedog-desktop-<version>-setup.exe. The installer isn't signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen warns you: click More info → Run anyway.

First start

  1. Start Notedog. Its Settings window opens.
  2. Enter your phone's address on the local network, your tunnel address, or both. With both, the app uses the local network. For the local address, paste the https://… address Notedog shows under On this network.
  3. Click Save and restart, then approve the pairing on your phone.

You can change these later from the tray menu, or by right-clicking an empty spot in the window: Settings…. The tunnel is the same paid option as in the browser; see remote access.

Updating

There's no automatic update yet. To update, install the new version over the old one. Your login and settings stay. To hear about new versions, open the releases repository on GitHub and choose Watch → Custom → Releases.

Known limits

  • When your phone's local IP address changes, the phone makes a new key, and the app says the phone's identity changed. If you know why (the address changed), open Settings and tick Forget the phone's key. The app signs out, trusts the new key, and you pair again. Tunnel users don't see this.
  • The Windows installer isn't signed yet (see above).
  • No macOS version.

The app has no analytics. It connects to your phone (directly, or through our tunnel relay, as the browser does), loads images your entries link to, and downloads spell-check dictionaries from Google's servers, like Chromium does.

Feedback

Found a problem, or something feels off? Please open an issue on GitHub. Say which system you use and which version of the app. It's at the bottom of Settings and at the top of the tray menu, or run notedog-desktop --version.
